Nicaragua, the key gate of Russia’s presence in Latin America

Pak Sahafat – The Russian ambassador to Nicaragua, emphasizing that the world is in a complex period of transition to a multipolar order, assured that the Kremlin will strengthen its “practical and privileged” cooperation with the government of Managua to improve and strengthen Moscow’s presence in Latin America.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report, quoted by Efe news agency, Alexander Khokhólikov, the Russian ambassador to Nicaragua, stated in a meeting with the officials of this country: We consider Latin America as an important political and economic center of information in the new multipolar order.

This Russian diplomat pointed out that this is exactly one of the goals of strengthening practical and privileged cooperation with the Republic of Nicaragua among other countries.

Nicaragua, a country with a population of 6.7 million, has been ruled by the Sandinistas since 2007 and is located in the center of the Americas. (The Sandinistas take their name from Augusto Cesar Sandino (1934-1895), leader of the Nicaraguan nationalist revolution against the US occupation of the country in the early 20th century.)

Daniel Ortega, President of Nicaragua, met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on April 19 (30 April), and discussed bilateral cooperation and the possibility of expanding relations between the two countries. According to Lavrov, the Russian authorities purposefully support the strengthening of cooperation between Russia and Latin America based on mutual support, solidarity and consideration of mutual interests.

Nicaragua: Russia is still a victim of Western aggression led by the United States

The Russian ambassador said in his speech: Today, we are all going through a complex period of transition from the world (unipolar) to a new multipolar order, a fairer and more equal order, and in this regard, Russia is at the forefront of this global trend, as in the past in its history.

According to the Russian ambassador, “every day more and more countries realize that the future just world is not compatible with the rule-based order imposed by the West, which is tantamount to neo-colonialism.”

Russia, Nicaragua’s old ally, which provided Soviet weapons to the Nicaraguan armed forces during the first period of Sandinista rule (1979-1979), first established diplomatic relations with Managua in 1944.

In addition, at the end of 2020, Nicaragua established a consulate in Crimea, a territory annexed from Ukraine to Russia, which drew criticism from Ukraine.

In one of his comments about the war in Ukraine, the President of Nicaragua previously stated: Russia is fighting for its security, against the Nazis who ruled and killed in Ukraine, where they staged a coup in 2014, and it was brutal.

Ortega accused the Ukrainian government of carrying out “terrorist acts” against its people since 2014, just as dissidents in Venezuela and Nicaragua did in the recent past.
