Syria: The right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland is non-negotiable

Pak Sahafat – Syria’s representative to the United Nations on Thursday evening during a fundraising conference for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) stressed that the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland is a non-negotiable issue.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency, the official Syrian news agency (SANA), “Bassam Sabbagh,” said: Syria has not and will not spare any effort to stand by the Palestinian people in their struggle for the recapture of the occupied territories and their legitimate rights, and emphasizes the responsibility to protect their rights.

He said: Syria has provided all the dignified living conditions for the Palestinian people to whom it has sought refuge in recent decades, but the difficult economic conditions that Syria has endured over the past decade as a result of the terrorist war and the coercive measures imposed by some Western countries.

The Syrian representative added: The destruction of a large part of the infrastructure and vital parts of a number of Palestinian camps by terrorism requires an urgent need to rebuild these parts, which we hope will be done as soon as possible, including in schools and health centers, with UNRWA as its headquarters and offices.

Sabbagh pointed out: Protecting UNRWA’s mission is a collective responsibility, and protecting the rights of Palestinian refugees despite coordinated and increasing attacks against UNRWA with the aim of undermining the rights of Palestinian refugees is a non-negotiable issue.

He concluded by saying that Syria once again calls on all UN member states to provide financial assistance to UNRWA in carrying out its duties and providing services to all Palestinian refugees.

Earlier, the director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said on the sidelines of the Sixth Summit “Support for the Future of Syria and the Region” in Brussels that Syrian and Palestinian refugees should not be affected by other crises.

Referring to his recent visit to the Yarmouk camp in Syria, he spoke of the unfavorable living conditions and hardships of the refugees in the area, and warned of an increase in the number of refugees at the camp. According to him, the UNRWA building in Yarmouk has also been destroyed.
