American media: America is looking for a plan to increase the number of members of the Security Council

Pak Sahafat – An American media reported that Joe Biden’s administration is developing plans to transform the UN Security Council, and American officials hope to restore trust in this Security Council by recognizing the scattered power map in the world today.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency, The American newspaper Washington Post reported that Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the United Nations, is consulting with diplomats from 193 member countries of the organization to get feedback on the possible expansion of the American Council before the annual gathering of world leaders in New York this fall.

This American media claimed: Despite the reluctance of the established powers in the Security Council to cede their traditional dominance in this council, Biden is seeking reforms in it. The US government is trying to show that the United Nations is still an important tool to prevent war.

A senior American official, who did not want to be named, said that the government, led by Thomas-Greenfield, is trying to “convince members of the United Nations about a reasonable and credible proposal that can actually succeed and bring about reforms.

The United Nations Security Council has five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members as presidency of the Security Council is periodic and its duration is one month, and the head of the delegation of each country is known as the head of the UN Security Council.

The five permanent members of the Security Council include Russia, China, the United States, England, and France, who have veto power in this council.

The main task of this council is to maintain international peace and security, which, with the unilateralism of some of these members, has moved away from its main mission and has been ineffective in many cases.

The 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council are chosen by the United Nations General Assembly with regard to the participation of the members of this organization in maintaining international peace and security and other goals of the organization, as well as on the basis of fair geographical distribution.

In fact, the 10 elected members of the Security Council are elected by the General Assembly for a two-year term beginning on January 1. A member who withdraws cannot be re-elected immediately.

Each year, the General Assembly elects five new members and replaces the older members whose terms expire on December 31.

On June 16, the United Nations General Assembly consisting of 193 countries voted to elect five non-permanent members of the Security Council for the period 2024-2025.

Slovenia, South Korea, Guyana, Sierra Leone and Algeria are the five new members of the Security Council.

In the meantime, Belarus, a close ally of Russia, lost in the competition with Slovenia for a seat on the 15-member Security Council.

In an election that showed opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Slovenia won an Eastern European seat on the Security Council, and Belarus was denied entry.

In this voting, Slovenia got 153 votes and Belarus got 38 votes.
