Sputnik: Saudi and Syrian officials have been meeting for the past year

Pak Sahafat – In an interview with Sputnik, informed sources announced that the meeting between Saudi and Syrian officials began about a year ago.

According to the report of Pak Sahafat International News Agency, knowledgeable sources announced that the meeting between Saudi and Syrian officials has started for about a year.

These sources announced that the time of Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan’s trip to Damascus was set after Eid al-Fitr.

The mentioned sources also emphasized that it is likely that the Saudi Arabian consulate will be reopened after the completion of the necessary arrangements during the holy month of Ramadan.

According to the reports of these sources, the meetings between Saudi and Syrian officials were at the diplomatic, military and intelligence level, as several delegations traveled from Syria to Riyadh and from Riyadh to Syria.

Informed sources emphasized that some of the meetings took place during the visit of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to the UAE.

In response to a question about whether there is a possibility of Bashar Assad’s visit to Riyadh and the possibility of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to Damascus, knowledgeable sources said: Everything is possible. Things are moving quickly and brotherly understandings have been made.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Saudi foreign minister is likely to travel to Syria after the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

According to this report, if Damascus and Riyadh reach an official agreement, the axes of Syria’s return to the Arab countries and the reconstruction of this country will be on the agenda of the meeting of the heads of Arab countries.

The Saudi Arabian TV channel “Al-Akhbariya” announced on Thursday evening, according to an informed source in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, that the country has started negotiations with Damascus to resume consular services.

Earlier in this regard, three knowledgeable sources told Reuters that Syria and Saudi Arabia have agreed to reopen their embassies after cutting off diplomatic relations that lasted more than a decade.

The re-establishment of relations between Riyadh and Damascus is the most important development in the efforts of Arab countries to normalize relations with the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Many Western and Arab countries cut ties with Damascus after the start of the global terrorist war against Syria in 2011.

According to Euronews, a regional source aligned with Damascus said that contacts between Riyadh and Damascus have gained momentum after the historic agreement to re-establish relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Iran, Saudi Arabia and China announced in a joint statement on March 19, 2023, that as a result of the talks, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia agreed to resume diplomatic relations within a maximum of two months and to close their embassies and missions.
