Guterres in Baghdad; what are the agendas of the UN Secretary General’s trip to Iraq?

Pak Sahafat – UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has traveled to Iraq after 6 years while he has many Iraqi, regional and international agendas on the table for negotiations with Iraqi parties.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency, Guterres, who arrived in Baghdad last night, attended a press conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fawad Hossein today.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fawad Hossein announced consultations with the UN Secretary General regarding “political and regional issues” and said: Our relations with the United Nations are strong and we hope to have meetings and discussions with the Secretary General on internal, regional and international cases.

Guterres also said that he feels happy to be in Iraq and is sure that “Iraqis will overcome security and political challenges.”

The Secretary General of the United Nations appreciated the efforts of the Iraqi government to return Iraqis abroad.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric also announced in a statement that Guterres is in Baghdad to emphasize the UN’s commitment to “support Iraq’s efforts to strengthen peace, human rights and sustainable development for all Iraqis.”

He added that the Secretary-General of the United Nations will meet in Baghdad with a number of Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani, a number of representatives of women’s and youth rights organizations, and UN staff in the capital.

Guterres will go to the refugee camps in northern Iraq and will meet with representatives of the Kurdistan region in Erbil. He will then go to Qatar to attend the conference on least developed countries.

The Secretary General of the United Nations visited Iraq earlier in the spring of 2017.
