The increase in brain drain is the result of the escalation of political tensions in Sri Lanka

Pak Sahafat – According to the latest news reports, following the increase in political and social tensions in Sri Lanka due to the worsening economic crisis in this country, brain drain has become a common phenomenon.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report on Sunday, quoted by Reuters, with the severe blow that the Sri Lankan economy suffered during the Corona epidemic and the tax cut by the Gotabaya Rajapaksa government, Sri Lanka is in the middle of the worst economic crisis since the country’s independence from Britain in 1948 and in the past 70 years.

In this way, the inflation rate of 50%, along with the lack of food, medicine and fuel, has drawn hundreds of thousands of protestors to the streets of this country since months ago.

According to news reports, since March (March/April), Sri Lanka has faced severe problems due to the reduction of foreign exchange reserves, severe shortage of fuel, medicines and food items such as powdered milk.

Due to the difficult living conditions in Sri Lanka, a number of educated people in this country say that they have lost their trust in the government and have decided to leave this country.

However, the Sri Lankan Immigration Department does not provide an accurate report on the exact number of people who have left the country so far. But the long queues in front of the visa issuing centers in this country indicate the desire of the Sri Lankan people to leave their homeland.

According to government statistics, at least 288,645 new passports have been issued in Sri Lanka in the first five months of 2022. Meanwhile, this figure was 91 thousand 300 in the same period last year.
