Sunak’s spokesperson: London does not support the normalization of relations with Damascus

Pak Sahafat – The British Prime Minister’s spokesperson said on the eve of the Arab League meeting, which will be held after 12 years of Damascus’s absence, with the return of Syrian President Bashar Assad, that London’s position towards Damascus has not changed and it does not support the normalization of relations with Bashar Assad’s government.

spokesperson of Rishi Sonak, who asked not to be named according to the usual procedures of the Prime Minister’s Office, said this in response to a question from a reporter in London who asked what the British government’s position is regarding the normalization of Arab countries’ relations with Syria.

He claimed: Syria’s joining the Arab League depends on the decision of its members, but in general, our position towards Damascus and the importance of holding Assad accountable for the crimes he committed against his people has not changed.

In response to the journalist’s question about London’s position regarding the quadrilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Iran, Syria, Turkey and Russia in Moscow, the participating parties emphasized territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs and fighting all forms of terrorism in Syria, said: Of course, we have not interfere in this meeting, and the British government does not support the normalization of relations with the Assad government.

In their extraordinary meeting held in Cairo on May 7, 2023, the Arab foreign ministers agreed to the return of Syria to the Arab League, and since then, the participation of Syrian delegations in the meetings of this league has been resumed.

The meeting of the foreign ministers of the Arab League member states started with the presence of the Syrian foreign minister in Jeddah and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad arrived at the King Abdulaziz airport to participate in the meeting.

Earlier, the King of Saudi Arabia officially invited Bashar Assad, the President of the Republic of Syria, to participate in the meeting of the Arab League.

On Sunday, the Arab League welcomed the return of Syria to this group and expressed hope that warm relations will be established between Damascus and other Arab countries. The meeting of Arab heads of state was held on Friday, May 19, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
