Nicaragua’s insistence on leaving the Organization of American States

According to the Pak Sahafat news agency, quoted by AFP, the letter, signed by Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Dennis Moncada and addressed to Luis Amagro, Secretary-General of the Organization of American States, stated: “I am writing this letter to formally inform you of my unwavering determination to condemn the Charter of the Organization of American States in accordance with Article 143, which commences the final withdrawal and resignation of Nicaragua.”

Article 143 of the Charter of the Organization of American States allows a country to withdraw from the Organization at the end of a two-year process. During this period, the country must fulfill its obligations to this organization.

In the letter, a copy of which was sent to the media, the Nicaraguan foreign minister said he had acted on the president’s orders.

“Vice President Rosario Morillo, who is also the wife of Daniel Ortega, told official media: “We feel happy and proud, because today, by abandoning this unacceptable and fake organization, which is by no means our representative, we have set a new example of our status as an independent nation.”

For his part, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez welcomed Nicaragua’s decision on his Twitter account, calling it “a firm response to the Secretary-General’s maneuvers, in collusion with the United States, to intervene in decisions concerning the people of Nicaragua.”

Daniel Ortega was elected President of Nicaragua on November 7 for the fourth consecutive term. The General Assembly of the Organization of American States claimed on November 12 that the Nicaraguan election was neither free nor fair nor transparent and lacked democratic legitimacy.

Venezuela began a similar process in 2017 after the Organization of American States threatened to suspend it for violating constitutional order.

Last Tuesday, Washington banned Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega from entering the United States. By imposing sanctions and supporting the opposition to the Nicaraguan government, the United States is trying to overthrow the legitimate government of this country, which has an anti-American approach.
