Libyan envoy: UN envoy implements US policy

Pak Sahafat – Libyan House of Representatives MP Mohammed al-Abani said Monday night that Stephanie Williams, Anthony Guterres’s special adviser on the country, is implementing US plans and policies in the region.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency, Al-Albani told Sputnik that Williams was pursuing the same interests of Washington as the Libyan people.

She added that the Libyan crisis will never be resolved by the UN special envoy for the country.

Al-Albani revealed: In the wake of the Ukraine crisis, Washington is trying to erode Libyan oil, as it sends Libyan oil to Europe instead of supporting Ukraine.

She added: The Americans are also exploiting some Libyans seeking positions.

Al-Abani, meanwhile, said Libyans are not incapable of finding a solution to their country’s crisis, but foreign interventions through embassies are preventing them from finding a solution.

Williams, the former head of the UN mission in Tripoli, was appointed Guttierez’s special adviser on Libya on 16 December 2021.

Williams was appointed four days before the resignation of Jan Kubis, the UN special envoy to Libya, on December 10, and 18 days before the December 24 Libyan presidential election.

Williams previously served as Acting Special Representative and Chairman of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Libya (2020-2021) and Deputy Special Representative (Political) for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Libya (2020-2018).

The United Nations also announced on November 23 last year that its envoy to Libya, Jan Kubis, had submitted his resignation to Antonio Guterres, who had accepted it and was seeking a replacement as soon as possible.

Jan Kubis, a veteran Slovak diplomat, was appointed UN envoy to Libya on January 17, 2016, with the approval of the UN Security Council.

Kubis was previously the Slovak Foreign Minister, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, and the UN Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Iraq.

Libya has seen many political tensions and military clashes since 2011 following a popular uprising and a military offensive by NATO forces aimed at ousting then-dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
