Hamas agrees to hold consecutive Palestinian elections

According to Palestinian sources, Hamas waived its condition to hold simultaneous elections for the presidency of the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian Legislative Council, and agreed to hold them consecutively after Arab and international guarantees.

He added that Hamas had received assurances from five countries, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Qatar and Russia, that they would commit to holding the three elections within six months in fair and equitable conditions, and that the mediating countries had also guaranteed the transparency of the elections.

Hamas had previously called for all three elections to be held simultaneously, but the Fatah movement called for parliamentary elections, then the presidency and finally the National Assembly in succession.

Another Hamas source said that the ball was now in Fatah’s court and that Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian Authority, had consulted with those countries and asked them to act on the success of the national reconciliation plan, and they also gave guarantees. .

Another source described Hamas’ move as a kind of flexibility for the reconciliation plan, which is strategic and irreversible for Hamas, especially at this critical juncture in the Palestinian issue.

He added that Hamas had also agreed to Fatah’s request for elections based on a single list and full representation.

The former Palestinian parliamentary elections were held in 2006 on the basis of two mixed proportional representation systems and local lists, in which Hammas won. In 2005, Palestinian Authority elections were held and Abbas won a majority.

The source said that several developments led Hammas to make such a decision, including the Zionist regime’s approach to holding the fourth parliamentary elections and the new US administration under President Joe Biden.

In recent days, the head of the political bureau of the Hamas movement wrote a letter to Abbas about the end of the division and the realization of national unity through holding elections, and this letter was welcomed by the organization.
