Eight other protesters were killed in Myanmar

Myanmar security forces opened fire on protesters on Sunday, killing at least eight people.

A new round of violence by Myanmar security forces against protesters in a military coup has left at least eight people dead.

Three months after the coup against the Myanmar government, security forces opened fire on a large crowd of protesters on Sunday, killing eight people, Reuters reported.

Protesters, including a large number of Buddhist monks, rallied in many cities and towns in Myanmar on Sunday, calling for the military to step down.

According to local media reports, three were in the town of Wletlet in central Myanmar, two in a town in their northeastern province, one in Hepkant in Kachin state and two in Mandalay in Suburbs of Myanmar’s capital Yangon were shot dead by soldiers.

Protesters are just one of the problems facing the Myanmar military, which ousted Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi on February 1, Reuters reported.

Fighting with ethnic and separatist minorities in the border areas of northern and eastern Myanmar has also intensified since the coup, with tens of thousands of civilians displaced by UN estimates.

In addition, in central Myanmar, the military is facing the problem of small and large explosions by unknown groups.

On Saturday, Myanmar state television reported at least 11 explosions in the previous 36 hours in Yangon.

Some insurgents and protesters who do not want the post-coup government to stabilize are planting bombs and improvised explosive devices in government buildings and public roads, Reuters reported.

According to the Association for the Assistance of Political Prisoners, at least 759 protesters have been killed by the coup since the coup.

On February 1, the Myanmar army arrested Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior government officials on the pretext of electoral fraud. Since the military coup, Myanmar people have been protesting in various cities, demanding the release of former government officials and the withdrawal of the military.
