Saudi Arabia welcomed the establishment of diplomatic relations with Syria and the return of Damascus to the Arab League

A day after Faisal al-Maqdad’s trip to Saudi Arabia, Riyadh hosted a meeting of foreign ministers of the Cooperation Council and Iraq, Egypt and Jordan to discuss the Syrian case.

Riyadh has severed its relations with Damascus since the beginning of the Syrian crisis and after it turned into an international war. This is the first visit of a Saudi foreign minister to Syria after the beginning of the crisis in this country in 2011.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan also traveled to Syria on April 18 and met and talked with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia announced in a statement that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia has discussed with Syria the steps to realize the national interests of the two countries and the return of Syria to the Arab League.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry also announced that Bin Farhan discussed efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis during his meeting with Assad.

In recent weeks, Syria has seen an increase in calls from Arab countries to normalize their relations with Damascus.

Experts say that after the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, the Arab countries are trying to start a new chapter in their relations with Syria by adopting an approach away from the orders dictated by the West and adopting an independent policy.
