The American political situation after the mid-term elections from the perspective of an international affairs analyst

Pak Sahafat – An analyst of foreign policy and international issues, referring to the results of the American mid-term elections, said: Based on the results announced so far and the state of the seats in the houses of representatives and the senate, it seems that the legislative process in the United States will be slower than the current difficult conditions, and the partisan differences in this country will intensify.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency, in an exclusive interview with IRNA reporter, Amir Ali Abulfath said: According to the announced results, it is likely that the US House of Representatives will be in the hands of the Republicans, and if this happens, both parties can be considered the winners or losers of this election.

He added: The American legislature consists of two houses of representatives and the Senate, and now each is controlled by one party, which will make the process of passing laws in the United States more difficult than the current situation.

This analyst of American issues continued: Republicans wrested one House from the hands of their rival party, which is a success, but since they could not dominate the other House and so to speak, the red wave (which is the color of the Republican Party) did not happen, they lost this election.

Abol-Fath, saying that US President Joe Biden also lost a parliament, added: But since the party ruling the White House has traditionally lost in the first primaries, keeping 50 Senate seats for the Democrats is considered a success for the president’s party.

This foreign policy analyst added: Even now, the legislative process in the United States is facing difficulties, and from now on, the situation will become more difficult for the executive branch.

He added: Previously, Biden also faced problems, and even though the ruling party had control of both houses, but because their majority was fragile, in many cases they had trouble passing laws until they united with a number of Republicans, the challenge continued and today these conditions have become more difficult.

According to Abul Fatah, in the current situation where the majority of the Congress is with the Republicans, both the President of the Congress and the heads of all the committees of the Parliament are at the disposal of this party, and it is the President of the Parliament who will determine what plan and when to be put on the agenda of the Congress.

He added: On the other hand, the Republicans are trying to make it difficult for the approval of plans that can bring votes for the Democrats in the upcoming elections.

Biden will face impeachment

This foreign policy analyst stated: American Republicans have sworn to impeach Biden, and with the current results in Congress, this possibility becomes stronger.

Stated that it is likely that the issue of America’s hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan will be the subject of impeachment against the President of the United States, he said: Since impeachment is a long process, typically taking more than a year for a judicial investigation to take place, when America is in the heat of the 2024 presidential election race, the incumbent head of state will face a major challenge.

Abul Fatah added: Undoubtedly, in the current situation, any field, whether domestic or foreign, will suffer a record, or to cross the Congress barrier, the democrats must fight and give effort in order to get the approval of the divided Congress.

Regarding the results of this election and the possibility of its impact on the process of JCPOA nuclear negotiations, this political analyst said: The responsibility of the US foreign policy lies with the president who makes decisions with the help of his advisers and since the government has not changed, there is a significant difference in this field overall.

The anti-Russian atmosphere in America is strong

Referring to the Republicans’ opposition to the Biden government’s policy towards Ukraine, this international affairs analyst said: The anti-Russian atmosphere in the United States, especially Washington, is very strong, and it is very difficult for the Republicans to oppose this heavy atmosphere.

He continued: It is true that some Republicans have spoken against the US aid to Ukraine, but it does not mean that with the victory of this party in the House of Representatives, the macro policy of the US towards Russia and the war in Ukraine will change.

Abol-Fath added: It is possible that with Republicans ruling the Congress, this parliament will be stricter on sending military or financial aid to Ukraine, but the aid will continue.

He stated that cutting off these aids is a big mistake for Russia and said that it is not within the power of the Congress despite the anti-Russian atmosphere of the United States.

This foreign policy analyst stated: In the current situation, the United States may announce that Ukraine must pass some anti-corruption laws or take measures to combat money laundering in order to receive more aid.

He reminded: Because Ukraine does not have a good position in the ranking of the fight against financial corruption, and the suspicion of money laundering in Ukraine is high, and there is a possibility that American weapons will be given to Russia or sold on the open market.

According to Abul Fatah, in the current situation, the supervision and strictures in this area will undoubtedly increase and we will no longer witness the previous handiwork to send financial and military aid to Ukraine.
