“Mr. Saw”; the title of Bin Salman on the streets of Washington

A number of trucks with pictures of the Saudi Crown Prince depicted in front of the White House in Washington, the Saudi Embassy and the US Congress nicknamed the Saudi Crown Prince “Mr. Saw”.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency International Group, Saudi opposition sources announced on Monday evening that some critics of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s actions have painted pictures of him on some cars, indicating his involvement in the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashgechi, a Washington Post columnist who went missing in Turkey.

Abdullah al-Awda, secretary general of the opposition Saudi National Rally party, posted pictures on his Twitter account: “The streets of Washington today saw cars crossing the streets saying, ‘We deserve democracy, not Mr. Saw!’

According to Abdullah al-Awda, the trucks passed in front of the White House, the US Congress, the street in front of the Saudi embassy in Washington, which was recently renamed to Jamal Khashgechi, yesterday.

Jamal Khashgechi was born on October 13, 1958. He was previously the editor of Al-Watan newspaper and later the director of Al-Arab news network. Khashgechi fled Saudi Arabia in September 2017, and later published articles as a columnist for The Washington Post criticizing some of his country’s policies, especially those of Mohammad bin Salman. He was an outspoken critic of the Saudi-led coalition’s military intervention in Yemen.

Khashgechi was brutally assassinated in October 2018 at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

Nearly a year after Khashgechi’s assassination, on September 25, 2019, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in an interview with PBS that the assassination took place “during his term” but “without his knowledge.”

On the other hand, the US government published a report last March on the assassination of Jamal Khashgechi, which showed that the assassination was carried out on the direct orders of Mohammad bin Salman.

The report, released by the US National Intelligence Agency, said Mohammad bin Salman had issued an operational permit to “arrest” or “kill” Jamal Khashgechi.

Part of this report stated: “Our assessment is that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has authorized an operation in Istanbul, Turkey to arrest or kill Saudi journalist Jamal Khashgechi. Our assessment is based on the fact that the Saudi Crown Prince has been in control of decisions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since 2017.”

The US report explicitly stated that “the Saudi Crown Prince saw Khashkchi as a direct threat to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and supported violent measures to silence him.”
