Even Europe does not understand Ukraine

Pak Sahafat – The European and war-torn country of Ukraine has been demanding to join the European Union for a long time, but the ongoing war in this country has made even the leaders of this union no longer ready, despite their slogans to support this country against Russia.

Apparently, the war in Ukraine, which the United States manages in Eastern Europe at the head of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO), has caused so much destruction in this country that even the European Union is not willing to accept this country into its family.

The evidence shows that the leaders of the European Union for a long time, other than giving political slogans to support this crisis-stricken European country, are not ready to take any action to save it and especially to join this political and economic union, for fear that they might be forced to do so in this situation. Inflation caused by the continued erosion of this deadly war will impose its subsequent costs on the citizens of this union.

It should be noted that Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, had previously signed the request for his country’s accession to the European Union on February 28, 2022, four months after the start of his country’s war with Russia.

The American magazine “Foreign Policy” wrote in a report about this yesterday: “European countries have factors such as very low economic level, many damages in the war with Russia, systematic political-administrative corruption in Ukraine and the lack of a unified political party with a plan in “Ukraine is considered one of the main reasons for the impossibility of Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.”

Ilke Tuygur and Max Berman, analysts of this magazine, believe that swallowing war-torn Ukraine, a country with such size, population, low income and in need of severe reconstruction and financing, requires fundamental reforms in institutions, policies and budget processes in the Union itself.

Even some other analysts believe that if Ukraine joins the European Union, it is not unlikely that the Eastern European countries of this union will enter into their endless economic crises, and as a result, the economic power of the union, which until last year was going to lose its competitive position in international relations. Especially in the competition between East and West (China and America and even emerging economic powers (BRICS), it will gradually go into decline.

For this reason, the Sputnik news agency of Russia, whose country is directly involved in this war, yesterday, referring to the Europeans’ disagreement over Ukraine’s admission into the union, claimed in a report that the rhetoric of European politicians about Ukraine’s membership in the European Union does not match their actions.

These same European countries, despite the slogans they gave at their meeting in Brussels last February and seemingly welcomed Ukraine’s joining the Union, and even “Charles Michel”, the head of the Council of the Union, wrote in a Twitter message addressed to Zelensky, “Go home and Welcome to the European Union”, this time they refused to even take a souvenir photo with Zelensky and his wife.

In fact, the heads of the 27 member states of the Union have the final word to determine whether it is possible to start membership negotiations with Ukraine. For this reason, analysts believe that until these 27 leaders can reach a consensus on this issue, Ukraine’s full membership will remain in doubt, especially since no peace can be imagined for this war.

So far, mediations by Latin American countries, African countries and Asian countries have also failed to end this war of attrition due to the division among these 27 members of the European Union, especially with the guidance and discord of the United States.

For example, members of the five emerging economic powers of the world (BRICS) sent South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to Moscow and Kiev to mediate this war on behalf of themselves and even the entire African Union two weeks ago, but despite Russia’s agreement with Western countries did not meet the main conditions of peace.

Apparently, in the meeting that was held yesterday and the day before between the heads of states and governments of the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Brussels to adopt a common position on Ukraine, the Europeans could not agree on a joint formulation to prepare a final document.

Analysts believe that as long as the war in Ukraine continues and there is no strong will to end this war, it is impossible to imagine a future for Ukraine to join the European Union, because the signs of this reluctance of the Europeans are still in the statements of the officials of this union.

On June 25, in an interview with the LCI TV channel of his country, Clement Bon, the Minister of Transport of France, said that “the entry of a country with a population of 40 million and a great agricultural power into the European Union will obviously be a shock to the budget of this union.”

He also pointed out the need for EU members to invest in the reconstruction of Ukraine after the end of the war if this country enters the union and emphasized that it is important for the European Union to maintain its chosen geopolitical path and work on changing its structure to ensure the possibility of countries like Ukraine that wish to join it.”

Earlier on the same day, Italy’s Deputy Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed doubts about Ukraine’s joining the Union, and even Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky explicitly stated on June 22 that there is no shortcut for Ukraine to join the Union.
