The Swedish embassy in Baghdad was set on fire by supporters of the Sadr movement

Pak Sahafat – Qatar’s Al Jazeera news network claimed early Thursday that the Swedish embassy in Baghdad was set on fire by supporters of Seyyed Moqtada Sadr’s movement.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency from this Qatari network, after the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad was set on fire, supporters of the Sadr Movement entered the Swedish Embassy.

This action is taken after the Iraqi foreign minister emphasized in a conversation with his Swedish counterpart on Wednesday that the repetition of acts that insult Islam and the Holy Quran should be prevented.

Ahmad al-Sahaf, the spokesman of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, announced that Fawad Hussein, the country’s foreign minister, made a phone call with Tobias Billström, the deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Sweden, to discuss the issue of threatening the desecrator of the Quran to repeat his action.

Hossein emphasized the dangerousness of these positions and asked the Swedish government to prevent and deal with the repetition of these humiliating actions.

Earlier, following the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden, on July 8, Iraqi citizens marched towards the Swedish embassy in Baghdad and entered the embassy in protest of the Stockholm government’s permission to insult the Holy Quran and demanded the expulsion of the ambassador.

Iraqi demonstrators first gathered in front of the Swedish Embassy building in al-Salahiya area of central Baghdad and chanted slogans against the Swedish government’s permission to desecrate the Holy Quran and condemned this action.

At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq summoned the Swedish ambassador in Baghdad in protest against the desecration of the Holy Quran in Stockholm and demanded the extradition of the perpetrator of this desecration.

This ministry demanded that “Salvan Mamika”, a Swedish person of Iraqi origin, who burned a copy of the Holy Quran, be extradited to Iraq in order to prosecute him according to the country’s laws.

The head of the Supreme Court of Iraq also ordered that the person of Iraqi origin, who tried to burn the Holy Quran in Sweden, should be prosecuted and the necessary legal measures should be taken to extradite him to Iraq.

“Faiq Zidane” ordered legal measures to be taken against an Iraqi of origin, who tried to burn the Holy Quran in Sweden, based on the provisions of Article 14 of the Iraqi Penal Code.

“Basem Al-Awadi”, the spokesman of the Iraqi government, also emphasized that the Baghdad government strongly condemns the actions taken by some mentally ill and extremists regarding the repeated burning of copies of the Holy Quran.

He added: The Iraqi government believes that this heinous act hurt the feelings of millions of Muslims and even offended the people of the West, who have long welcomed diversity, respect for other people’s opinions, support for religions and the rights of religious followers.

Ayatollah Seyed Ali Sistani, the supreme authority of Shiites in Iraq, also said on July 8 in a statement and message to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres about the desecration of the Holy Quran and the permission of the Swedish government: Respect for freedom of speech cannot justify this shameful behavior, which is an open attack on the sacredness of more than two billion Muslims in the world.

A Swedish extremist, supported by the authorities and the police of this country, burned the Koran outside the main mosque of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, in front of the eyes of about 200 Muslims.

In recent years, some European countries, especially the Scandinavian region, have been the scene of violations and desecration of Muslim sanctities. In the shadow of the support of the Swedish police, the right-wing extremists tried to set fire to the Holy Quran, and Muslim protests were also suppressed.
