AFP: Saudi Arabia has executed 100 people in the last 70 days

After the mass executions of 81 people were announced in Saudi Arabia, news sources reported that the number of executed people in the country had reached 100 in about two and a half months.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency International group, Western media reported that the total number of executions in Saudi Arabia since the beginning of this year (about two and a half months) has reached 100 people.

France 24 news website reported on Thursday, quoting AFP in this regard that four more executions were carried out in Saudi Arabia yesterday, bringing the total number of executions to 100 since the beginning of the year.

AFP noted that the executions took place a few days ago when Riyadh was criticized for the mass execution of 81 people. The Saudi Interior Ministry said in a statement issued by its official news agency (WAS) that it had executed several Indonesian and Saudi nationals on Thursday.

Riyadh claimed that these people were executed on charges of murder and rape. The announcement came as three other people were executed in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson traveled to Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi Interior Ministry announced on Saturday that He has executed 81 people for what he called deviant beliefs and links to terrorism. Reacting to the news, the so-called “Saudi Peninsula Opposition” said that 41 of those executed were youths from the Al-Harak peace movement and residents of the Shiite areas of Ehsa and Qatif.

The Yemeni government also reacted to Saudi Arabia’s announcement by announcing that two Yemeni prisoners of war imprisoned in Saudi Arabia were among 81 people executed by the Saudi regime in violation of international law.

According to AFP, the number of executions in Saudi Arabia has risen to 100 this year, up from 69 in the same period last year. Saudi Arabia also executed 184 people in 2019, the highest number in a year.

Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, also reacted to the recent mass execution in Saudi Arabia on Sunday evening, calling it inhumane and contrary to the basic principles of human rights and international law without observing fair judicial processes.

A spokesman for Iran’s diplomatic corps stressed that executions and unbridled violence were not the solution to self-inflicted crises, and that the Saudi government could not use the usual headlines to cover up political and judicial turmoil and repression.

Khatibzadeh also condemned the silence and inaction of the countries claiming human rights, recalling the application of double standards by Western countries and the instrumental use of the concept of human rights, calling it a sign of their hypocrisy in politically exploiting the concept of human rights for political greed.

AFP also noted in its report today that Riyadh has been heavily criticized by human rights organizations for its high number of executions, and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bashe on Saturday condemned Saudi Arabia’s mass execution of 81 people, noting that some were executed while their trial did not meet international standards.
