10 years in prison; Punishment for defending human rights in Saudi Arabia

Pak Sahafat – News sources reported that the Saudi government finally released one of the founders of the old Saudi civil and political rights group, “Hasem”, who was imprisoned for defending human rights in this country, after spending 10 years behind bars.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report on Sunday, quoting Arabic News 21, democracy Organization for the Arab World announced that the Saudi government Dr. Abdul Karim Al-Khidr, a university professor and political and civil activist of this country, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison and a 10-year travel ban for his political activities, after serving his term Conviction, set free.

Due to the 10-year travel ban, he will not be able to leave Saudi Arabia despite his freedom.

Al-Khidr is one of the founders of the Civil and Political Rights Society in Saudi Arabia (Hasm), which is one of the oldest non-governmental human rights organizations in this country.

Before his arrest, this Saudi political activist was teaching comparative jurisprudence at Al-Qassim University.

He also headed the defense team of Abdullah al-Hamid and his brother Isa al-Hamid, both of whom were political activists and were arrested in 2008.

Al-Khadr has researches in the field of peaceful demonstrations and hunger strikes of prisoners.

In 2013, the Saudi government arrested the civil and political rights group “Hasem” for defending human rights and reflecting the dire situation of human rights in this country and supporting the peaceful protests of the people sentenced to long prison terms for terrorism.

International human rights organizations have repeatedly called for the release of members of the Hashem community. Abdullah Al-Hamid was one of the founding members of this group, who suffered a stroke in prison in 2020 and died two weeks later.
