Zarif: The Nagorno-Karabakh issue is an opportunity for peace and friendship in the region

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran said: “The Nagorno-Karabakh crisis has been resolved as a joint concern of Tehran and Moscow with the mediation of Russia and has now become an opportunity for peace and friendship in the region.”

Mohammad Javad Zarif raised the issue on Tuesday at a joint meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.

At the beginning of the meeting, Lavrov, referring to the good relations between Tehran and Moscow, said: “In today’s meeting, we will address key issues such as the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, the UN Security Council, the settlement of the Syrian-Afghan conflict and the situation in the Persian Gulf.”

Zarif thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for establishing peace in Nagorno-Karabakh and said: The Nagorno-Karabakh crisis was a joint concern of Tehran and Moscow, resolved through Russian mediation, and has now become an opportunity for peace and friendship in the region.

He also said: “We will examine the regional issues and the issue of Burjam, from which the United States was unilaterally excluded, and the development of bilateral relations in today’s meeting.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Jawad Zarif, arrived in Moscow on Tuesday morning to continue bilateral and regional consultations with Russian officials.

Upon arrival in Moscow, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran said: International situation With Trump’s departure, it is a special situation that we and Russia need to coordinate our positions on this issue.

Referring to the depth of strategic relations between Tehran and Moscow, Zarif said: “In this trip, we will consult with the Russian Foreign Minister on developments in the region, especially the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, Burjam, bilateral relations and international issues, including Syria, Afghanistan and Yemen.”
