Yahoo left China

The American company Yahoo left China due to what it called growing business challenges and strict Internet laws.

Yahoo announced on Wednesday that its services, including a weather app and another technology blog, will not be available in mainland China as of November 1. “Yahoo products and services remain in other parts of the world,” the company added.

Yahoo cited growing business challenges and the legal environment in China as the reason for leaving China. China’s Personal Data Protection Act, which was approved by the People’s Congress in August this year, went into effect on Monday this week.

The law enacts regulations that prohibit the over-collection of personal information and price discrimination against current customers based on big data. According to the law, personal information processors must refrain from targeting users’ personal characteristics when providing business information and marketing to individuals through automated decision-making, and provide ways to reject the offer.

The law also requires the suspension or termination of services for programs that illegally process personal data. The law requires the installation of bulletin boards in public places where equipment for collecting images and identifying persons is installed, and stipulates that the collected images and identification information can only be used to maintain public safety.

Sensitive personal information such as biological data, religious beliefs, health, financial and place of residence information, and personal information of persons under 14 years of age are protected by law and can only be processed for a specific purpose, such as sufficient necessity and strict safeguards.

Last month, Microsoft affiliate LinkedIn said it would shut down its social network in China later this year.
