What do Saudi Arabia and the UAE want in southern Yemen?

Pak Sahafat- Since two weeks ago, the southern provinces of Yemen have witnessed a new wave of conflict between Saudi and Emirati mercenary militias. Some analysts consider these conflicts in line with the efforts of Riyadh and Abu Dhabi to unite these mercenaries and at the same time compete to divide these provinces in order to plunder their oil wealth in the shadow of the global energy crisis.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report on Thursday, since two weeks ago, the continuous conflict between the mercenary militias supported by the UAE on one hand and the militias affiliated with the “Al-Islah” party on the other hand has entered a new phase in Shabwah province in the south of Yemen. Even if Riyadh and Abu Dhabi agree on a series of goals, it will not be free of conflict of interests and differences over a series of other goals.

These conflicts are between the militias known as “Shabwa Defense” affiliated with the Transitional Council of the South and supported by the UAE and the militias of Hizb al-Islah, which is close to the Muslim Brotherhood. In the meantime, the militants of the Salafist group known as “Al-Amalaqa” also act in favor of the militants of the Southern Transitional Council. This is what caused the Southern Transitional Council to take control of the city of Ataq, the capital of Shabwah province in the south of Yemen, after defeating Hizb al-Islah militias for the past three years.

Despite their internal rivalries, all three groups have served the UAE and Saudi Arabia as mercenaries, but according to some analysts of Yemen affairs, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are seeking to clean up and unify their mercenaries (eliminating Hizb al-Islah militias) in the province. South Yemen is under the order of the United States to prepare there for the export of stolen oil and gas from Yemen in the shadow of the world energy crisis.

Sufyan Al-Amari, one of the southern leaders of Yemen and the secretary general of the Democratic Party of Sana’a, believes that it is true that Hizb al-Islah has served the aggressor to a large extent, because this party is the biggest party that called the aggressor to the country and dishonored the land of Yemen. Kurdish and it is the first party that encouraged the killing of Yemenis, but now it is disappointed in the implementation of its wishes and sees the fruits of its betrayal to the country and people.

He stated that the tools (Southern Transitional Council and Hizb al-Islah) are different, but their goal is the same, adding: The goal is to loot Yemen’s oil and gas resources and divide the country, which started with the announcement of the US and Saudi aggression against Yemen 8 years ago. It led to a conflict between the same Yemeni mercenaries who basically occupied the southern provinces of Yemen.

According to some reports, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, while coordinating with each other, are also competing for dominance in southern Yemen.

In this connection, the Lebanese “Al-Akhbar” newspaper in a report written by “Ahmed al-Hasani” about the situation in the southern provinces of Yemen in the shadow of the current military conflicts of Emirati-Saudi mercenaries, has mentioned that the arrival of the first group of militias supported by the UAE in the outskirts of Hadramaut province and in For Riyadh, the side of Khair oil areas represents a violation of the lines of influence drawn by the parties (UAE and Saudi Arabia) in the southern provinces.

This decision surprised the militias of “Al-Amaleqah”, “Defence of Shabwa” and even Hizb al-Islah itself, because the militias supported by the UAE had previously violated the ceasefire declared by the military committee under the puppet council known as “Yemen’s Presidential Council”.

In fact, the decision to suspend the attack was made after Riyadh and Abu Dhabi agreed that a Riyadh-backed organization would replace Hizb al-Islah militias in the military zone in Sion in Hadhramout province, and in return, control the entire province of Abin. The UAE should be granted, which Abu Dhabi regards as a shield separating its militias in Aden from the militias in Shabwa.

With the dominance of the UAE-backed militias in Abyan province, the distribution of cake to the southern provinces is complete; In such a way that the UAE’s influence extends from Aden and Abin to Shabwa, and on the other hand, the provinces of Hadhramout and Al-Mahrah remain under the rule and plunder of Saudi Arabia.

Following the understandings reached to stop the advance towards Hadhramout province, the UAE quickly sent troops to the Shaqra region, which is one of the contact points (Saudi-Emirati mercenary groups) since 2019 and in the past years And before the “Riyadh Agreement”, it was the scene of many conflicts. This agreement emphasized the necessity of ending the conflicts and forming a government equally between the two parties involved (the puppet government in southern Yemen) and the structuring of the military and security forces in the form of the ministries of defense and the country (this puppet government). Although this agreement ended the conflicts of the parties, each of the two sides still remained in their positions.

The “Southern Transitional Council” affiliated to Abu Dhabi recently announced the “Eastern Arrow” operation and said that this operation is aimed at controlling Abin province and securing it against “terrorist groups”, but according to observers, the real purpose of this The operation to take control of the entire province and expel the “Abin axis militias” including the protection brigades of Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, the resigned and fugitive president of Yemen, was from there, and practically last Monday night, with the entry of the militias of the “Southern Transitional Council” without conflict. The positions of these militias were based on the agreement of the militias affiliated to Hizb al-Islah to remain in their positions and the militias affiliated to the Southern Transitional Council to be deployed along the coastline and the communication line of Abin, Shabwa and Aden provinces.
