UN: Gaza is the largest prison in the world

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in a report on the recent Israeli war with the Gaza Strip, stressed that they had not found any evidence of the use of civilian facilities in Gaza by resistance groups.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, today (Thursday) released a report on the Zionist regime’s 12-day war with Palestinian resistance groups and criminal attacks on the Gaza Strip.

Speaking at the start of an extraordinary session of the UN Human Rights Council held at the request of Islamic countries, Bashlet said: “We are witnessing an increase in hostilities in the [occupied] Palestinian territories. The imminent expulsion of Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and the deployment of Israeli troops in Al-Aqsa Mosque have fueled recent tensions.”

According to Reuters, he clarified about the Zionist regime’s attacks on civilian places in the Gaza Strip: “Israel claims to have bombed armed groups in Gaza, but its attacks have killed and wounded civilians. We have not seen any evidence of the use of destroyed civilian facilities in Gaza by any militant group.”

The UN official continued: “Israeli citizens benefit from the Iron Dome [defense system], but the Palestinians in Gaza have no cover. Israeli attacks on Gaza, the killing of civilians and the targeting of civilian facilities could be war crimes.”

According to the report, Bachelet also spoke about the plans of the occupying regime in Jerusalem to expel the Palestinians from their homes: “I urge the Israeli authorities to immediately stop expelling the residents of Sheikh Jarrah and other neighborhoods. Israel is obliged under international law to protect the inhabitants of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza.”

According to the Euronews website referring that “Gaza is the largest open-air prison in the world,” he said: “We want to uphold the values of justice and vote in favor of the resolution submitted to the council.”

He is referring to a resolution calling for the imposition of arms embargoes on the Zionist regime and the establishment of a committee to investigate war crimes against the Palestinians, which will be voted on today at the UN Human Rights Council.

Calling for global action against the Israeli occupation, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stressed: “All the reports [of the Human Rights Council] on Palestine show a gross violation of [international law] by the occupying authorities. Israel will not end its occupation without effective international action.”

He also added: “There is no doubt that Israel has the right to defend its citizens and residents. However, the Palestinians also have rights.”

In the 12-day clashes between the resistance groups and the Zionist regime, more than 4,000 rockets and rockets were fired at occupied Palestine, and the weakness of the Iron Dome in intercepting and destroying Palestinian resistance rockets caused great financial and human losses in Zionist cities and towns.
