UAE Ambassador to the United Nations: Our approach is dialogue and tension reduction

Pak Sahafat – “Lana Nusibeh”, the ambassador and permanent representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, who holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council, emphasized that the UAE’s approach is dialogue, diplomacy and reducing tension in the region.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency, Ms. Lana Nusibeh, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, on Thursday local time, in response to a question about the actions and approach of the UAE during her presidency of the Security Council regarding Iran’s recent actions in detaining two oil tankers, said that our approach is dialogue and tension reduction.

Lana Nusibeh added: The UAE has had a long-standing commitment regarding shipping security. One-fifth of the world’s oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, and in a situation where we are facing an energy crisis in the world, ensuring shipping security is a big responsibility.

He stated that of course we are facing global threats regarding shipping security, and emphasized that the best way to reduce tension in the region is dialogue.

The UAE ambassador to the United Nations continued that based on the foreign policy position of the United Arab Emirates, the country’s approach is dialogue, diplomacy and reducing tension in the region.

The UAE added: Following its continuous assessment of effective security cooperation with all partners, it withdrew from its participation in the United Navy two months ago, but remains committed to ensuring maritime security in its seas in a responsible manner and in accordance with international law.

In April 2022, the United States announced the formation of a “combined naval force” in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea region for what it called the containment of Iran’s role in the region.

The United Arab Emirates, which is one of the 10 non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, holds the rotating presidency of this council this June.

The Security Council of the United Nations has five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members.

The five permanent members of the Security Council include Russia, China, the United States, England, and France, who have veto power in this council.

The main task of this council is to maintain international peace and security, which, with the unilateralism of some of these members, has moved away from its main mission and has been ineffective in many cases.

The 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council are chosen by the United Nations General Assembly with regard to the participation of the members of this organization in maintaining international peace and security and other goals of the organization, as well as on the basis of fair geographical distribution.

In fact, the 10 elected members of the Security Council are elected by the General Assembly for a two-year term beginning on January 1. A member who withdraws cannot be re-elected immediately.

Each year, the General Assembly elects five new members and replaces the older members whose terms expire on December 31.
