Turkey’s negotiations with Russia, China and South Korea to build a nuclear power plant

Pak Sahafat – The head of Turkey’s Nuclear Energy Organization has announced talks with Russia, China and South Korea for the construction of the second nuclear power plant of his country in “Sinop” province.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report from Turkish media, “Saleh Sari” said these words on the sidelines of the opening of the 5th exhibition and 9th conference of nuclear power plants in Istanbul.

He also announced that talks with China for the construction of the third nuclear power plant in Thrace region in the northwest of Turkey are ongoing.

This Turkish official added that the required research in the Sinop region, where Turkey’s second nuclear power plant is to be built, has been completed.

He also said that his country is currently negotiating with South Korea and Russia to build another nuclear power plant in Sinop.

Sari added: “We are also in close contact with American, English and French companies regarding the small size nuclear reactor, and our field research is also ongoing regarding the construction site of the fourth nuclear power plant.”

“Ak Koyo” nuclear power plant in Mersin province in the south of Turkey is the first nuclear power plant in this country.

The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey announced on April 10 that Turkey’s first nuclear power plant in Akkoyo region of Mersin province on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea was ready for operation.

Fateh Donmez said: With the transfer of the used fuel, the Ak Koyo nuclear power plant will enter the energy production cycle on April 27, 2023.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also announced the refueling and opening of this power plant on April 9, 2023 in a live TV program with the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the field or in a video.

According to Turkish media, the first phase of this nuclear power plant in southern Turkey with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts has been completed and ready for operation in five years by Rosatom.

It is expected that this power plant will create 6 to 8 billion dollars of added value for the Turkish economy.

With the full operation of this power plant, 35 billion kilowatt hours of electricity will be produced annually, and this nuclear power plant unit alone is able to supply the electricity needed by the metropolis of Istanbul.

Turkey has invested more than 20 billion dollars for the construction of this power plant, and it is actually the biggest investment project in Turkey and after its full opening, it will be able to supply 10% of the country’s electricity needs.

The initial contract for the construction of Ak Koyo power plant was signed in 2010 between Turkey and Russia.

The use of nuclear energy entered the agenda of the Turkish government in 1962, when an experimental reactor with a power of one megawatt called TR-1 was launched in Kuçuk Cekmece district of Istanbul by the Nuclear Research and Training Center.

The government of Ankara, especially Erdoğan himself, has always supported the right of countries in the peaceful use of nuclear energy in international forums, and has clearly announced his position in this regard and emphasized that he intends to reduce nuclear energy by at least 20% in a long-term period.
