The war in Afghanistan cost the German people 17 billion euros

The German army left Afghanistan this summer. The 20-year mission of the German army and related matters in Afghanistan cost more than 17 billion and 300 million euros.

According to Pak Sahafat news agency, quoting Deutsche Welle, the German government has announced in a report to the German parliament that the 17-year-old mission of the 20-year-old army and some other institutions in Afghanistan cost 17 billion euros, which ended with the capture of Kabul by the Taliban this summer.

The main part of the expenses was related to the presence of the German army in Afghanistan. The German government has said in response to a request from the German Free Democrats’ parliamentary faction that the German military took part in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and the Resolute Support Mission (RSM) from 2001 to August 31, 2021, a total of about 12 billion and 300 million euros were spent by the German Ministry of Defense and additional expenses related to this mission.

The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs has spent about 2 billion and 48 million euros for personnel and material costs related to the projects. The German government has said that this amount does not include personnel and operating expenses of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The German Ministry of Development has provided about € 2.46 billion in aid to Afghanistan over 20 years.

The German Ministry of Food and Agriculture has spent a total of € 33 million over the past two decades.

Information on the cost of security intelligence (BND) services in Afghanistan is classified as confidential.

The German government has said that the release of information related to the performance of intelligence services will have a major impact on the agency’s work and, in turn, could jeopardize Germany’s security or seriously harm its interests.

Information about the infrastructure built by Germany and currently used by the Taliban is also confidential.

The withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, which led to the forced withdrawal of NATO troops, including German troops, further persuaded powerful EU countries such as France and Germany to pursue a defense policy independent of Washington.
