The conversation between the leaders of France and India about Ukraine

Pak Sahafat – French President’s Office announced in a statement that French President Emmanuel Macron had a telephone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Ukraine crisis on Tuesday evening.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency from Reuters, this statement states: The two sides agreed to work together to end the conflict in Ukraine.

Macron also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday, during which the French president emphasized his concerns about the dangers of war for Ukraine’s nuclear facilities.

While European countries, including France, have imposed extensive sanctions against Russia due to its attack on Ukraine, India has so far not only refused to sanction Russia, but has also significantly increased its oil imports from this country.

New Delhi had previously also abstained from voting in the General Assembly to condemn Russia’s war in Ukraine.

India has imported 13 million barrels of oil from Ukraine since February 24 and the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, India’s crude oil import from Russia was only 16 million barrels in 2021.

On February 21, 2022, Vladimir Putin recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics in the Donbas region, criticizing the West’s indifference to Moscow’s security concerns. On February 23, just one day before the start of the war in Ukraine, the Council of the European Union approved the first package of sanctions against Russia in response to this action.

On Thursday, February 24, Putin launched a military operation against Ukraine, which he called a “special operation”, thus turning the tense Moscow-Kiev relationship into a military confrontation.
