Security Council: Afghan girls’ high schools to reopen immediately

Pak Sahafat – The United Nations Security Council has issued a statement expressing deep concern over the ruling Taliban in Afghanistan’s decision to ban high school girls from attending schools and urging them to reopen schools immediately.

According to Pak Sahafat News agency, A few days ago, the Taliban violated the promise to establish girls’ high schools and announced that they would remain closed as long as there was no plan in accordance with Islamic law to reopen them.

Following the decision, the United States canceled a meeting with the Taliban in Doha, Qatar, to discuss economic issues.

The Security Council requested that in addition to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s ongoing inspections in Afghanistan that it monitors Iran’s compliance with “the steps required by the IAEA Board”.

In the meantime; The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, said in a statement that the inability of Taliban officials in Afghanistan to meet their commitments to reopen schools for sixth-grade and older girls, despite repeated commitments to educate girls, is “extremely destructive.”

Guterres called on the Taliban to open schools for all students

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Taliban officials to open schools immediately for all students.

The UN Secretary-General said he deeply regretted the Taliban’s move to delay the return of high school girls to the classroom, and that the Taliban’s move, despite its repeated commitments, was “very discouraging” and “deeply damaging to Afghanistan.”

He believes that deprivation of education not only violates the equal rights of women and girls in education, but also jeopardizes the future of the country given the huge role of Afghan women and girls.

According to previous commitments and official Taliban announcements, all girls’ schools in Afghanistan were scheduled to reopen on Wednesday last week.

The Taliban Ministry of Education said in a new statement that the girls’ high schools would be reopened after a decision was made on the clothing of students and teachers in accordance with “Afghan Sharia and Traditional Law”.
