Saudi activists go on hunger strike

Media reports indicate that legal activists went on a hunger strike in a Saudi prison.

According to Arabi 21, legal activists went on a hunger strike in the Al-Haier prison in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.

Maha al-Qahtani, the wife of Mohammed al-Qahtani, one of the founders of the Hussam movement, who has been imprisoned in Saudi Arabia for years, said he and 30 other people had gone on a strike.

In addition to Mohammed al-Qahtani, Fouzan al-Harbi and Issa al-Nakhifi, two other legal activists have gone on a hunger strike in al-Haier prison.

Al-Qahtani, 55, is a Saudi political activist and a founding member of the Civil and Political Rights Society (Hussam). He was arrested in 2013 and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Saudi cyberspace users also launched various hashtags to express their support for prisoners on hunger strike.

They called on the Saudi authorities to release these legal and political activists as soon as possible. The Saudi users stressed that some of the prisoners had been detained during the reign of former Saudi King Abdullah and were still in prison despite their peaceful and legitimate demands.
