Red Cross: A policy of engagement with the Taliban is essential

The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has said that a policy of engagement with the Taliban is needed to prevent the situation in Afghanistan from deteriorating.

According to the regional office of Pak Sahafat news agency Peter Maurer, chairman of the International Committee of the Red Cross, said the international community needed to develop a clear policy to engage with the Taliban to prevent the situation in Afghanistan from deteriorating.

“The Maurer said: I believe that the policy of engaging with the Taliban is necessary to prevent the situation from getting worse, this may be difficult and, as always, it is easy to fail in such situations, success and stabilization are always more complicated, more difficult, more attractive, and more tedious.

The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) added that the non-recognition of the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan could exacerbate the country’s humanitarian and economic crisis, as international organizations and banks could not fund an unrecognized government.

Maurer said: “We strongly believe in the importance of partnership, because the crisis is very deep and the threat of instability is real not only in Afghanistan but in the whole region.”

Expressed satisfaction with the Taliban’s guarantees for the Red Cross to operate in Afghanistan, he said: “It’s a fact that we have been working with the Taliban for decades, We interacted with each other for the first time when they were in power, and when they were not in power, we were in contact with them as a party to the conflict; We have also been able to establish trust and relations with some of the most prominent Taliban figures.”

According to the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Afghanistan is currently facing a combination of political, economic and humanitarian crises, and the need for humanitarian assistance has intensified in recent years due to escalating conflict, structural poverty and the Corona epidemic.

According to Sputnik, Maurer said that the supply chain of medicine and medical equipment has been disrupted and the food security crisis has become more apparent due to rising food prices, making Afghanistan an extremely fragile country.
