Expressing US concern about anti-espionage measures in China

Pak Sahafat – The United States has expressed concern over the request of the Chinese government to the people of this country to join the anti-espionage work and expand the laws in this area.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency from Reuters news agency, the United States of America expressed concern about China’s request for its citizens to join the anti-espionage work and announced that Washington is carefully monitoring the implementation of extensive anti-espionage laws in China.

Beijing should encourage and reward its citizens to join counter-espionage work, including by creating channels for people to report suspicious activity, China’s Ministry of Homeland Security said on Tuesday.

The ministry added that a system should be created so that the participation of ordinary people in countering espionage becomes a “normal” thing.

The move comes as China expanded its anti-espionage laws in July, banning the transfer of information related to national security. This raised alarm in the US, which claimed that foreign companies in China could be penalized for normal business activities.

Matthew Miller said at a news conference: We have concerns about this, certainly encouraging citizens to spy on each other is a big concern. The US is closely monitoring the implementation of China’s new anti-espionage law.

In recent years, China has arrested dozens of Chinese citizens and foreign nationals, including an executive at the Astellas Pharma pharmaceutical company, on suspicion of espionage. Cheng Li, an Australian journalist, has been arrested since September 2020 on charges of providing secret government information to another country.

China’s concern about the threat from spies comes at a time when Western countries, especially the United States, have accused China of espionage and cyber-attacks.
