Declaring a state of emergency in the US capital

Pak Sahafat – Muriel Bowser, the Democratic mayor of Washington DC, the US capital, declared a state of emergency in the city after the arrival of hundreds of buses carrying immigrants from states bordering Mexico.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report on Friday from Reuter’s news agency, the mayor of Washington has ordered the establishment of the Office of Immigrant Services with a budget of 10 million dollars to help and support asylum seekers and has requested the federal government of the United States to cover the costs of these people.

Texas Republican Governor Garrett Abbott sent nearly 8,000 immigrants to Washington DC, as well as more than 2,200 immigrants to New York and 300 to Chicago in order to transfer pressure on border crossings to Democrats, including President Joe Biden, from Oriel.

The state of Arizona also sent nearly 1,700 migrants to Washington DC, although some of them got off the bus in other states before reaching their destination.

Boeser’s office, as well as the Democratic mayors of New York and Chicago, called the move a political obstruction of the administration.

According to volunteers helping immigrants, nearly 85 to 90 percent of immigrants arriving in Washington by bus go to other destinations in the United States within a few hours or days.

Boeser said his city is preparing to increase the number of migrants crossing the border in the fall, sending hundreds more buses carrying refugees from Texas and Arizona to New York.

More than a year has passed since US President Joe Biden took office, the reality we are witnessing is the continuation of former US President Donald Trump’s most aggressive immigration plans towards immigrants and “betrayal of the promises of the Oval Office” in the palace.

On February 2, 2021, US President Joe Biden announced his goal regarding the immigration crisis in this country to “remove the moral and national shame of the previous government”. During his 2019 campaign, the 46th president of the United States promised to fight to change immigration laws and provide a path to US citizenship for millions of immigrants living in the US illegally.

Prensa Latina news agency wrote: The American government is not only unable to fulfill its promises, but also insists on a racist, xenophobic and oppressive view of immigration, and while the number of immigrants entering the southern border reaches record numbers, the treatment of illegal immigrants violates human rights in many cases. The number of those who enter the United States through the Mexican border and are victims of physical and mental abuse is not small.

The Intercept website reported on the inhumane conditions of the detention centers on the southern borders of the United States based on the 66-page report of “Human Rights First”.

According to this documentary study, the current administration’s immigration policy has led to the long-term detention of tens of thousands of asylum seekers last year, the detention of children in adult centers, and the racist and abusive treatment of black people.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit organization specializing in civil rights and public interest litigation, affirms that such actions represent a “betrayal of Oval Office promises” to advocate for more humane treatment of immigrants.

The New York Times reported Saturday that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is considering using actual military power to crack down on the surge of immigrants crossing the US southern border, which Republicans say would be an “invasion.” According to this American publication, Abat is trying to gain control of the 1,254-kilometer border line of his state by gaining wider state powers.

Over the past year, Abbott has turned the relentless flow of migrants across the Mexican border into a powerful political message, playing the role of the country’s defender against illegal immigration.

At that time, the United Nations emphasized that the action of the United States in the mass deportation of Haitian refugees who entered Texas by crossing the Mexican border and camped under a bridge in the Del Rio area violates international norms.

Reacting to this news, US Vice President Kamala Harris called the scenes of border guards and immigrants being chased as “terrible” and said: “No human being should be treated like this.” “Chuck Schumer”, one of the other senior Democratic officials in the Senate, also said: these images are nauseating. This kind of violence must stop.

The governor of Texas has already mobilized thousands of National Guard troops to stand at border posts. He also ordered the security inspection of trucks coming from Mexico. Building about 20 miles of new border fence and dedicating some state prisons to hold immigrants are among other measures of Greg Abbott.

Actions that, with the widespread detention and deportation of immigrants, not only announce the conflict between Texas and the White House, but also, according to Abbott’s admission, will lead to unintended consequences, including legal prosecution by the law enforcement agencies of the state of Texas.

Title 42 is a public health and welfare act passed in 1944 that gives the United States the authority to determine whether a communicable disease in a foreign country poses a serious risk of spreading to a foreign country. This is exactly what Trump did at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. In March 2020, amid rising deaths from the coronavirus, the Trump administration proposed a new interpretation of Title 42: US Customs and Border Protection agents can immediately deport anyone entering the country without authorization to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

In the past two years, US Customs and Border Protection have deported many illegal immigrants under the pretext of Title 42 immediately after encountering them. By canceling this title, many of these immigrants will be allowed to remain at the border and have their asylum applications processed, which analysts say will make the situation worse and more people will try to emigrate.

The policy is set to expire on May 23, and while the Biden administration says it is logistically prepared to increase immigration and accept asylum seekers, the issue has become a contentious challenge among Democrats ahead of the midterm elections.

According to the latest statistics, from January 1 of this year (2022) to April 13, Mexican immigration officials have arrested 115,379 illegal immigrants.

US Customs and Border Protection also reported that it detained 221,303 illegal immigrants at the US-Mexico border in March.
