Countdown to the election of the new British Prime Minister

Pak Sahafat – With the ascension of Foreign Minister Liz Truss and the resigned British Finance Minister Rishi Sonak to the final stage of the prime ministerial election, the race for power in England has entered its final phase until one of the two remaining candidates is the key to the famous house.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report on Wednesday, in the fifth voting of representatives of the conservative ruling party among the remaining three candidates, “Liz Truss” surpassed former British defense minister Penny Mordant by a margin of 8 votes and managed to advance to the final stage together with Rishi Sonak.

The election to appoint Boris Johnson’s successor has proceeded up to this stage based on the approval of the representatives of the ruling party, but the selection of the last person is the responsibility of the general members of the conservative party, which is estimated to be around 200 thousand people.

Starting today, the two remaining candidates have about a month to gain more votes by explaining their plans and goals. Mass media are busy organizing debates with election candidates to add excitement to this process. So far, the Sky news channel has managed to arrange a debate for August 4 with the presence of Sunak and Taras.

Rishi Sonak, the outgoing finance minister of Boris Johnson’s government, is the architect of the popular plan to save jobs during the corona pandemic, and according to some observers, he is only one step away from taking power in England.

With the start of the first wave of the Corona epidemic and the announcement of quarantine, he asked the employers to send their employees on leave, and in return he agreed to pay 80% of their salaries up to 2500 pounds. This plan, which ended in September last year (2021), cost the government over 70 billion pounds.

But Sunak’s popularity declined on two occasions after that. When it became clear that he was present at the illegal parties of the prime minister’s office, he was fined by the police. Also, last April, he prepared the government’s budget bill with a significant increase in taxes, and this greatly reduced the popularity of the ruling conservative party.

At the same time there were rumblings of his resignation from the finance ministry, in a sudden U-turn to vacate the prime minister’s back when his popularity was at an all-time low and pressure for him to step down was at its peak.

Sonak submitted his resignation letter on July 5, shortly after the then British health minister, and wrote: Leaving a ministerial post at any time is a serious matter. For me, stepping down as finance minister while the world is suffering from the economic consequences of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and other serious challenges is a decision I did not take lightly. However, the general public expects the government to be run properly, competently and seriously. He added: I know that this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe that adherence to principles and standards are worth fighting for, and that is why I am resigning.

The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson changes his team to save himself

The earthquake caused by the resignation of this couple in the cabinet caused other protesting members of the cabinet to find courage and resign from their positions. Finally, on July 7th, Boris Johnson officially announced that he would step down from his post, so that elections could begin to determine a new leader.

A day later (July 8th), Sunak was the first person to officially announce his desire to participate in the elections. In his campaign, he promised that he would first curb inflation and then reduce taxes.

On the other hand, British Foreign Minister Liz Truss has remained loyal to the Prime Minister and has announced that she will reduce taxes on the first day of assuming the Prime Minister’s seat. Taras has claimed that only he can make the necessary economic reforms to save the country from the vortex of inflation and high cost of living.

In his last campaign, stating that “the country cannot grow by raising taxes” he said: My government will be fiscally responsible and people can trust me. After concluding several free trade agreements after Britain’s exit from the European Union, “Truss” is known as a champion of economic diplomacy, and has presented himself as an honest and pragmatic person who keeps his promises.

But Sonak, besides calling his economic plans savior, claims that he is the only one who can defeat the rival party (Labor) in the general election. The next general election in England will be held in 2024, and Sunak believes that only he can win against the Labor Party led by Keir Starmer, who has managed to gain high popularity for this party.

This face of the conservative party says: I would like to cut a wide range of taxes when I get into the prime minister’s office. But that won’t help you, the British people, and will make inflation worse. Those who suggest otherwise are not being honest with you. He added: “I will reduce taxes before the next election, but not before we control inflation and grow the economy.”

The results of the latest polls show that Ms. Truss’s chances of winning the prime minister’s seat are higher than Sunak’s. According to the latest findings of YouGov, Sunak has 35% and Taras 54% popularity among the general members of the Conservative Party.

Meanwhile, it is said that a significant section of the general members of the conservative party are supporters of Boris Johnson, and for this reason, Sunak’s job is not easy to win the votes of the voters and win the last round of the elections.

According to the announced schedule, voting will end on September 11 and the new British Prime Minister will be announced on September 14. Previously, candidates for the position of prime minister could withdraw from the competition so that the winner of the election could be determined earlier. But the faction of the conservative party, as the organization supervising the elections, changed the rules before the start of the voting, so that the candidates do not withdraw until the end of the election.
