Britain follows America to intervene in Taiwan

Pak Sahafat- In the heat of tensions between China and America over Pelosi’s possible trip to Taiwan, reports indicates that a British delegation will be sent to this island at the end of this year.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report on Tuesday, quoting from the website of the Guardian newspaper, a delegation from the Foreign Relations Committee of the British House of Commons is planning to visit Taiwan later this year (probably in November or early December), despite increasing tensions in the region.

Informed sources announced that this trip, which was originally planned for the beginning of this year, has been postponed due to the positive test of one of the members of the English delegation. But London is determined to make this trip with the aim of showing its support for Taiwan as a democratic island that China considers part of itself. The news of the possible visit of this British delegation has been published while London-Beijing relations continue to deteriorate. Last week, Conservative prime ministerial candidates Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak took tough stances on China. Following this debate, China’s ambassador to Britain accused some British politicians of sophistry in a video statement.

Tensions have increased in the Taiwan Strait in recent weeks following the publication of reports about the possible visit of Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, to Taipei. Beijing has repeatedly warned against such a move and threatened to take “decisive measures” if the trip is carried out.

But and what of Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan?

On the other hand, while London considers China as a long-term threat to Britain, it is taking steps to strengthen its relations with Taiwan. However, the country still officially maintains the “One China Policy” which recognizes Beijing as the sole legitimate government of China, although it has also maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan.

As secretary of state, Truss has in recent months urged Western countries to ensure Taiwan can defend itself against China. He stated in an interview last month that Britain should arm Taiwan; A comment that surprised some MPs and his colleagues.

On the other hand, Taipei’s representative office in London has so far refused to comment on the details of the British delegation’s possible visit to Taiwan, but has stated that Taipei welcomes any opportunity to strengthen ties with Britain.

The Foreign Relations Committee of the British House of Commons has also announced that it had been planning to visit Taiwan for a long time, but for security reasons, it refused to provide more details in this regard.
