Bachelet: I consult with the Taliban in Kabul on human rights and women

During a visit to Kabul, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet stated that she was consulting with Taliban officials about serious human rights abuses that endanger women and girls in Afghanistan.

According to the Pak Sahafat news agency, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Kabul, Michelle Bachelet, said in a statement that Afghan women and girls had continued to sue in recent months despite being threatened and attacked.

She added that “I am talking to Taliban officials about the urgent and vital need for progress, for the realization of the fundamental rights of women and girls, and for an end to many of the serious human rights violations to which women and girls are exposed.”

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said Women and girls should speak freely about the problems of society and take an active part in finding solutions that reflect their realities and aspirations.

Michelle Bachelet stated: If Afghanistan is to achieve peace and progress, Afghan women and girls must also play an active role in changing the country and be given the opportunity to lead the peace process and other issues.

MEP: Is the Afghan crisis forgotten because they are not European?

The statement said: “Girls need to be able to go to school and university and be empowered to make a strong contribution to the future of their country. Women must be openly present in the police force, in the courts, in the government and in the private sector, and in fact in every part of civil and social life.”

The international community has always criticized the Taliban for their actions against women, but the Taliban insists that the United Nations and the international community are unilateral without seeing progress.
