Argentinians protest against the conviction of the vice president

Pak Sahafat – At the same time as hundreds of Argentinians protested against the court verdict against Vice President Cristina Fernandez Kirchner in front of the Federal Court of Buenos Aires, political leaders and officials called this controversial verdict a “judicial and fake coup” and “political revenge” by the “judicial mafia” against an “innocent person”.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report on Wednesday, quoting Prensa Latina, Fans and military supporters of the vice president in a large rally protested his 6-year prison sentence and lifetime ban from holding government positions due to fraud and embezzlement of one billion dollars for the illegal transfer of national projects during his presidency (2003-2015).

This public mobilization started with the slogan “All with Cristina” and the protesters expressed their support for the former president by chanting slogans such as “Cristina the President”. Although many expect Kershner to be a candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Kershner announced: My name will not be on any ballot.

This ruling is not final until the appeal court’s decision is issued in this regard; A process that may take years. At the same time, if he can win again in the presidential elections of Argentina, he will be immune from arrest as long as he is the president of this country.

He also criticized the verdict and said: In Argentina, there is a parallel government and a judicial mafia.

“Alberto Fernandez,” the president of Argentina, also said in response to Kirchner’s conviction: It is unfair, today in Argentina, an innocent person has been convicted. Someone who the powers that be try to smear through the media and prosecute through judges who spend weekends in their private jets and luxury villas.

Less than 24 hours before Kerchner’s sentencing was announced, Alberto Fernandez in a message asked Argentina’s judiciary to begin the process of investigating a number of judges and prosecutors and former officials on charges of possible corruption. Fernandez said in a speech on state television: The facts show the deterioration of the quality and institutional conditions that some judges, prosecutors, former officials and businessmen were involved in and were all involved in a perverted game of bribery.

According to the Efe news agency, the facts about which the president wants to investigate include the trip of a group of judges, prosecutors, former government officials and former agents of the Federal Intelligence Agency to the mansion of British businessman Joe Lewis in Lago Escondido, in Patagonia, Argentina, by private plane.

Latin American leftist leaders also expressed their solidarity with Kirchner. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described the sentence against Cristina Fernandez as “political revenge and the anti-democratic disgrace of conservatism.”

Evo Morales, the former president of Bolivia, also condemned the “judicial and fake coup” against Kirchner and announced: after the failure of the attempt to assassinate Kerchner, today they are trying to remove him politically.

His supporters had threatened to paralyze the country if he was convicted. They blocked downtown Buenos Aires and marched to the Federal Court building. While the police were trying to block their way, they got into a fight and shouted in support of him and beat their drums.

Fernandez, who is considered Argentina’s most powerful leader this century, has been accused of wrongdoing in illegally awarding national contracts to a construction giant close to his family.

This sentence will definitely deepen the existing divisions in the society of this South American country and will divide this politicized society into two poles, on one side of which will be the supporters of 69-year-old Fernandez as a populist leader, and on the other side will be those who oppose him.
