24 killed in prison riot in Ecuador

Pak Sahafat news agency/ At least 24 people have been killed and more than 48 injured in riots in one of  largest prisons of Ecuador on Tuesday.

According to the Washington Post on Wednesday, this is the third violent riot in Ecuadorian prisons this year, which is taking place between rival criminal groups.

According to the police, the violence occurred around 9:30 am on Tuesday, when competing groups in the battle for control of one of the main prison units were attacked by guns and explosives.

According to officials, police entered the prison at 10:40 a.m. and, after evacuating staff, managed to take control of the center at 2 p.m.

The riots erupted on Tuesday, two months after similar clashes broke out in two of the country’s prisons, including the Littoral Guyakil prison, which killed 22 prisoners and declared a state of emergency in the prison system by Ecuador’s president.

In February, clashes in three prisons in one day killed about 80 prisoners, marking the worst prison riots in the country’s history.
