Pakistani Opposition Party Leader: Islamabad must recognize the Taliban

The leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islami party called on the main opponents of the Pakistani government to take immediate action in Islamabad to recognize the interim Taliban government for what he called “cooperation for peace and the establishment of a stable system in Afghanistan.”

According to Pak Sahafat, Pakistani media on Monday quoted Maulana Fazlur Rehman as saying that the Pakistan Democratic Movement was also led by a coalition of opposition parties.

The leader of the Islamist party said in an interview with local media in the city of Lahore: The Pakistani government should recognize the group by expressing sympathy for Afghanistan and solidarity with the Taliban.

He stated: Pakistan must immediately recognize Taliban rule to help war-torn Afghanistan. The remarks came as the Islamabad government announced that the condition for recognizing the Taliban interim government was the group’s commitment to fulfilling its promises, including human rights and women’s rights.

The leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party called the recognition of the Taliban interim government recognition of Afghanistan and said: Any cooperation and assistance to the Taliban primarily requires the immediate recognition of their interim government.

He argued that while China and Russia are interested in establishing ties with Afghanistan’s new rulers, Islamabad should also maintain ties with the Taliban because Pakistan has historical ties to the Afghan people.

Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States announced last week that Islamabad would recognize the Taliban if it kept its promises.

Earlier, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said in response to the formation of an interim government in Afghanistan that Islamabad continues to follow closely the changing developments in the country and hopes that all measures will be focused on responding to the urgent needs of the Afghan people.

Meanwhile, a Pakistani government spokesman said it was too early to announce a position or reaction to the formation of an interim government by the Taliban in Afghanistan, and that Islamabad was examining all developments.
