The idea of creating the BRICS group with the proximity of 4 emerging economic powers of the world, including Brazil, Russia, China and India, was formed during the height of American unilateralism in the mid-1990s. The history of the formation of this group, with the presence of 4 founding members, goes back to 2001, and finally “Break Group” was officially established on June 16, 2009. South Africa was also added to this group on September 21, 2010, and its name was changed from “BRIC” to “BRICS” after this country joined.

BRICS is a symbol of “regime-building and new structuring on the international stage” that is being developed by the emerging powers and against the G7 group. BRICS Bank was also established in 2015 under the name “New Development Bank”. Currently, this group has the largest share of global GDP (31.5%) compared to other economic blocs, including the Group of 7 (30.7%). 46% of the world’s workforce, a quarter of the land area of the earth, about 40% of the world’s population (3 billion and 187 million people in 2021) belong to the current members of this group. At the 2023 Johannesburg Summit, in addition to the 5 main countries, the heads of 70 other countries have been invited to participate in the summit, and none of the main western countries are on the list of invitees.
