UN representative: I am in contact with Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE about Yemen

Pak Sahafat – Hans Grundberg, the UN special representative for Yemen affairs, announced that he is in contact with the authorities of Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE to promote peace in Yemen.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report, Hans Grundberg, the UN special representative for Yemen affairs, added on Monday local time in a virtual meeting among journalists: I am in close contact with the authorities of Saudi Arabia, UAE and Iran to advance the current situation in Yemen. I hope that the current negotiations in Sana’a will continue and achieve a lasting result.

Regarding the impact of the restoration of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia on the situation in Yemen, Grandberg said that there are several positive developments that are promising.

We have almost witnessed a calm atmosphere in Yemen for the past one year, and this has helped to create a political situation, and if we add these developments to the positive atmosphere of regional reflection, an opportunity will arise for Yemen, that’s why I welcomed the statement published in Beijing that announced the restoration of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

At the same time, he added, we should not jump to conclusions. I want all parties in Yemen to take advantage of the opportunity and take it seriously. All neighboring countries of Yemen have an important role to achieve a permanent peace and political solution in this country.

The UN Secretary General’s special representative for Yemeni affairs said about Iran’s role in Yemeni peace: I have a good relationship with the Iranian government and I try to explain to them my opinion about the way forward for Yemen to make sure that Tehran supports my opinion about the way forward.

He clarified: The talks I had with Iran were constructive and I had similar constructive talks with Saudi Arabia. If we all pay attention to the spirit of dialogue in the region, I think all of Yemen’s neighbors have an opportunity to use their privileged position to make a positive effort in relation to Yemen.

Grandberg continued, in order to achieve a permanent solution to end the war in Yemen, the Yemeni parties must show a serious spirit of negotiation and compromise.

On Saturday evening, a Saudi delegation arrived in Sana’a hours after the visit of an Omani delegation to the Yemeni capital. This is the first visit of a Saudi delegation to Sana’a after the start of the Saudi war against Yemen in April 2014.

News sources reported last Thursday that the Saudi delegation that had traveled to Sana’a to consult with the Yemeni authorities left this country after a 6-day stay in Yemen.

Last Friday, Reuters news agency quoted two informed sources and wrote that a Saudi-Omani delegation is planning to travel to Sana’a soon in order to reach an agreement and a permanent ceasefire in Yemen.

According to Mehdi Al-Mashat, head of the Supreme Political Council of Yemen, the next round of negotiations with the Saudi delegation will be held after Eid al-Fitr.
