Turkey seeks Saudi friendship; what is the role of “Israel”?!

Saudi-Turkish relations have soured over the past three years following the assassination of Saudi journalist and New York Times columnist Jamal Khashgechi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, and Ankara, as far as it could, used the case to overthrow the Saudi Crown Prince because of its differences with bin Salman; The crown prince who, according to US intelligence reports, personally ordered the brutal assassination of a journalist opposed to the policies of the new Saudi rulers.

Turkey has recently transferred the murder case to Saudi Arabia; the move was seen by observers as an important step by Riyadh and Ankara in resolving differences.

Erdogan had said in February that he would travel to Saudi Arabia, but this did not happen. He was expected to travel to Riyadh after the Turkish president’s visit to the UAE, where some claimed he also met with bin Salman, but talks in some disputed cases between Turkish and Saudi officials, including Khashgechi’s murder, failed.

Returning from a visit to the UAE, Erdogan said talks were under way between Ankara and Riyadh, and expressed hope that the reconciliation process with Saudi Arabia would be resolved soon.
