Saudi newspaper: Iran and Egypt have established direct contacts

Saudi Arabia’s Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper quoted an Egyptian source as claiming that Iran and Egypt had been in direct contact for the past two months.

According to the international group of Pak Sahafat News Agency, the London-based Saudi newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat wrote in an article that Iran and Egypt had recent contacts.

The newspaper quoted an informed Egyptian source as saying in connection with the Cairo-Tehran relations case: “Cairo receives messages from Tehran almost continuously and implicitly in connection with Iran’s desire to resume relations with Cairo.”

The alleged source told Al-Sharq Al-Awsat: “Contact (without intermediaries) has been established between the two parties for the past two months, but it cannot be considered political; “Because these contacts are at the level of experts, Egyptian and Iranian specialists and are preliminary and coincide with the talks between Ankara and Cairo.”

The daily quotes Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh as saying that “progress in relations between Cairo and Tehran is in the interest of the region” as one of the reasons for the change in relations between Iran and Egypt.

Recently, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan called the atmosphere of the Riyadh-Tehran talks friendly, citing talks between the country and Tehran to resume relations, but said that the talks were still at a point where they could be seen as tangible progress.
