Saudi Arabia and the European Union have historical ties based on political dialogue between the two sides and convergent views on a number of issues.

The European Union is Saudi Arabia’s second largest trading partner, with statistics showing that trade between Saudi Arabia and the bloc reached more than 40 billion euros by 2020.

The European Union is an institution which, despite the enactment of applicable laws, its member states implement only to a limited extent or do not implement at all. For example, European countries continue to do business with Saudi Arabia, even though the European Union has blacklisted it for terrorist financing, and only countries that do not need Saudi Arabia follow the rules when it comes to arms restrictions. Some arms sales were made after the Yemeni catastrophes, but mostly by member states.

Europe also has an insatiable thirst for oil, of which Saudi Arabia is one of the most important suppliers, and for this reason, almost every crime committed by Saudi Arabia so far has been ignored by the Europeans or limited to condemnation, the most obvious of which is war crimes. In Yemen and the assassination of Jamal Khashgeji, he was a critical Saudi journalist.
