Amnesty International: Saudi cyberspace activists are facing severe repression

Pak Sahafat – Amnesty International announced that Saudi Arabia’s severe repression of cyberspace activists has intensified in the past year.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report, this organization has published the information of 15 people who were sentenced to 10 to 45 years in prison just for the crime of expressing their opinions on the Internet.

According to this report, the Saudi government has infiltrated some social networks in order to obtain the information of the opposition and take over the information published by the regime.

The director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa program said: Saudi Arabia has a black record of suppressing human rights defenders, journalists and members of civil society organizations, which includes ordinary people who publish their safe opinions on the Internet.

Philip Luther added: The terrible sentences issued in Saudi Arabia are a kind of warning to all citizens and people living in this country that no one who disagrees will be tolerated.

He added: At the same time, Saudi Arabia is trying to access published information about this country and its officials by infiltrating social networks.

Luther said: These repressive methods reveal the hypocrisy of Saudi Arabia regarding its claim to support the free dissemination of information on the Internet.

Amnesty International announced that the sentence of all 15 activists convicted in Saudi Arabia has been issued by the special terrorism court, and this court, based on vague laws, based on the laws related to cyber space and terrorism, considers freedom of expression equal to terrorism in order to punish these people.

Amnesty International stated that the suppression of those active on the Internet is just one of the tools used by the Al Saud regime to suppress the opposition.
