Human Rights Watch: The UAE treats Pakistani Shiite immigrants arbitrarily

Human Rights Watch (UNHCR) has condemned UAE officials for their brutal treatment of Pakistani Shiite immigrants.

The UAE government has forcibly expelled about 10 Pakistanis since October 2020 without explanation, but the issue of religion appears to be one of the reasons for the action, the agency added, according to Russia Today.

Human Rights Watch added in its report: All 10 deportees were Shiites and residents of the UAE, and most of them lived and worked in the UAE for many years as managers, sales clerks, CEOs of small companies, workers and drivers, like someone who has lived and worked in the UAE for more than 40 years and another was born and raised in this country.

The organization added: The UAE authorities did not make any charges against any of the deportees and did not even allow them to defend themselves.

The Human Rights Watch stressed that this is not the first time that Emirati officials have targeted Shiites; there are many reports of arbitrary arrests without charge and deportation without any explanation that UAE authorities have treated Shiites, including Lebanese, Iraqi, Afghan, Pakistani, etc., in an authoritarian manner during escalating regional tensions.

The UAE government has previously expelled hundreds of Lebanese Shiites who have lived in the country for years without giving any reason.
