The mayor of Washington and a number of members of Congress opposed the US police plan to make barbed wire fences permanent around the congressional building.
On Saturday night, several weeks after Trump’s supporters stormed the Congress building on January 6, security forces and police recently launched a plan called permanent fencing around the building to further protect and prevent any further action.
Just days after the bill was presented by US police, local leaders and members of Congress opposed it.
Opposing the plan, Washington Mayor Muriel Bouzer said the local government would not accept a permanent fence around the congressional building.
Referring to the current presence of fences around the Congress building, Bouzar said that these fences should be removed at the appropriate time.
House Speaker Elise Stephanick also voiced his opposition to a permanent blockade around Congress.
“It is a mistake to turn our House of Democracy into a castle,” said Jake Oaklinclos, a Massachusetts lawmaker who opposed the plan.
U.S. police on Friday denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning US President Donald Trump have been made more than once.
“In light of recent events, extensive security infrastructure measures must be taken, including permanent fencing and the availability of support forces near the Congress building,” US Congressional Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said in a statement.
Pittman, who has recently been appointed Chief of Congressional Police, added: Even before the 9/11 attacks, security experts had long stressed that more needed to be done to protect the Congress building.
