Amnesty International called for the immediate release of the Saudi Shiite woman activist

Pak Sahafat – Amnesty International called on the Saudi regime to immediately and unconditionally release Shiite woman activist Salmi al-Shahab, who was sentenced to 34 years in prison for several tweets.

According to the Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report, Amnesty International on its Twitter once again called for the immediate release of Salmi al-Shahab on the second anniversary of his imprisonment in Saudi Arabia.

This organization wrote: 2 years have passed since Saudi activist and doctoral student Salmi al-Shahab was imprisoned for his tweets in support of women’s rights.

This organization asked Salman bin Abdulaziz, King of Saudi Arabia, to release Salmi immediately and unconditionally and to cancel his sentence.

Salmi al-Shahab, 34 years old, is a mother of two children, a dentist and PhD student at Leeds University, who lived in England.

The Saudi regime arrested her when she returned to Saudi Arabia for vacation in January 2021 and put her in solitary confinement.

She was interrogated 285 days before the trial. In April 2022, the court sentenced Salmi to six years in prison, and after appealing the sentence, the Saudi Criminal Court extended the sentence to 34 years on August 9, 2022. The court also banned Salmi from going outside for 34 years.

In August 2022, Salmi said that she was attacked and insulted for being a Shiite.
